Smallpox Alert!

BETWEEN YOU AND ME by Kimberley Medlin
We pray to God Almighty
And in Jesus’ name too
We ask the Lord to keep us safe
We question ourselves and our cleanliness too
We have decided that all microbes are dangerous and some even fatal
All the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

Humanity takes six steps from each other
Questioning where the other has been to put us in danger
Second guessing the need to talk with each other
All the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

Decreasing our vision with these things called goggles and face shields
Decreasing our oxygen intake with ugly masks and pretty masks
We are willing to risk so much more for fear of what has always been
All the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

How we handle our food
How we handle all cooking utensils
Taking a drink and taking a sip
Spraying this surface and spraying that surface
We act like some contact is fatal
and some we don’t even give one little thought
All the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

Questioning each other
Questioning  ourselves
Risking all sanity to keep up with it all
Because all the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

Taking all orders to keep up with the distance
Throwing out all logic and reason and even science to boot
Losing consistency and losing trust in all of creation
Losing our grip on what actually matters the most
All the while there are still millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

Conditioned to panic conditioned to fear
The social grooming with countless mental and psychological restrictions
Always looking for what could be next
Trying to keep up with the invisible enemy
All the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

“Lord Jesus, protect and keep us all safe,” we say
“We trust you to proceed with your sovereignty and good will”
But then in fear we shove him right back out because we know that
All the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

So what about those microbes? Do they have any names?
Why yes they do
 A gazillion or two
 There’s herpes and chickenpox
Measles and rubella
All strains of hepatitis like A and B
You know there’s a C
There’s influenza and pneumonia
Corona to boot
Pick from ten or maybe 15 strains
But there could be even a hundred sub-variations to add to your growing list of fears
What about pneumococcal and Hib
Diphtheria and Pertussis
Tetanus and polio
We could think about mumps
And that other one that looks like bumps
Bumps on the rump
and bumps on our thumbs
It’s all because there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

Let’s talk about TB and malaria
And that other skeeter carried buggaroo
By the name of Dengue
Have you heard about rotavirus and the one they call typhoid?
Aren’t those icky coodies too?
Oh yes….yes they are
These are some of the  millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

So what shall we say then
Are there not anymore?
Actually there are more than you can count on one hand or two
More than you can hit with one shoe or two because
All the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

There have been plagues and pandemics
Some hoaxy and some not
One can never know if it will take them or not
Because all the while there are still millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

But let’s all be clear about the science in whatever we fear
These microbes have been transmitting and multiplying for thousands of years
Some are clingy and others are not
Some make us feverish some make us sweat
Some make us rashy and grumpy for sure
Some make us tired and tremor with shivers
But that’s because ….well,
All the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

They like us or hate us
Sometimes it’s hard to know
But mainly they just hang out  with each other
Like you and me with Billy Bob and Joe
Cuz you know….
All the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

It’s nothing new under the sun ya know
Either you use ‘em or lose ‘em
One way or another you cannot confuse them
They have their own life cycle just like Sally and Harry
Papa and mama
And definitely you
Always and forever
there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

So why all the masking and face shielding and this thing called social distancing?
Does it really stop them from partying
And frolicking like coodies gone rogue?
Why trap them and let them infest in your lungs and nostrils and around those loose lips no one should ignore
They should live in freedom just like you and all of the rest
Can you really stop the millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me?

Let mother nature do what she does best
With millions of microbes
Going to and fro
from dawn to dusk
In the dirt and on your skin
Under the medical radar most of the time
Because all the while there are millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me

God gave us what we need to boost our abilities
To challenge the body and make it stronger than ever
Take it from Nana and even Uncle Tom
Little sister and big bro John
And what of those furballs that lick you with love
They’re sharing it too so give ‘em a hug
You can’t stop the millions of microbes communicating and transmitting between you and me
