A mother whose son suffered severe brain damage after he was given the controversial MMR vaccine as a baby has been awarded £90,000 compensation.

The judgment is the first of its kind to be revealed since concerns were raised about the safety of the triple jab.

Robert Fletcher, 18, is unable to talk, stand unaided or feed himself.

June 28, 2010 — Infants aged 12 to 23 months have about double the risk of developing a febrile seizure for 7 to 10 days after being vaccinated with the measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV) combination vaccine compared with those receiving separate MMR and varicella vaccines, according to a new study.

Despite this increase, physicians and parents should understand that the overall risk for febrile seizures from either the MMR or MMRV vaccine is low, stressed lead study author Nicola P. Klein, MD, PhD, codirector of the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center in Oakland, California.

"The risk is less than 1 per 1000 doses, but the risk is twice as much for febrile seizures for MMRV when you compare it with MMR and varicella," Dr. Klein said. "The MMRV will cause 1 additional febrile seizure for every 2300 doses of MMRV given instead of the separate vaccine.”

The study appears in the July 2010 issue of Pediatrics and was published online June 28.

Post-vaccination testing is equally important for those who have suffered adverse reactions to the vaccine.

A woman subjected to a controversial vaccine trial as a baby without her mother's consent broke her silence last night to reveal her traumatic decades-long fight for justice.

Mari Steed (50) was effectively used as a guinea pig during the 'four-in-one' vaccine trials carried out on her between December 1960 and October 1961 when she was between nine and 18 months old.

A third of the experts advising the World Health Organisation about the swine flu pandemic had ties to drugs firms, it has emerged.
Five of the 15 specialists who sat on the emergency committee had received funding from pharmaceutical giants, or were linked to them through their research.

This article is part of Big Pharma, Bad Medicine, a forum on the impact of the pharmaceutical industry on medical training and science, and the responsibilities of physicians.

In May of 2000, shortly before I stepped down as editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, I wrote an editorial entitled, “Is Academic Medicine for Sale?” It was prompted by a clinical trial of an antidepressant called Serzone that was published in the same issue of the Journal.

The authors of that paper had so many financial ties to drug companies, including the maker of Serzone, that a full-disclosure statement would have been about as long as the article itself, so it could appear only on our Web site. The lead author, who was chairman of the department of psychiatry at Brown University (presumably a full-time job), was paid more than half a million dollars in drug-company consulting fees in just one year. Although that particular paper was the immediate reason for the editorial, I wouldn’t have bothered to write it if it weren’t for the fact that the situation, while extreme, was hardly unique.

Among the many letters I received in response, two were especially pointed. One asked rhetorically, “Is academic medicine for sale? These days, everything is for sale.” The second went further: “Is academic medicine for sale? No. The current owner is very happy with it.” The author didn’t feel he had to say who the current owner was.

March 12th 2010 saw six very special women from around the world, present documents and research about the HPV vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix to the FDA by request. The recent unanimous 11-0 vote by the members of the Centers for Disease Control’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) favoring every American over the age of six months receive the flu influenza vaccine is one more attempt by our federal health officials to open up our bodies to the free market capitalism of pharmaceutical coffers. It is another step to mandate a vaccine across the nation, a policy that has many supporters in the pro-vaccine science community.

The vote raises an alarm about our federal government’s scientific integrity, and calls into question its true allegiance and purpose: to protect the health of American citizens or increase Big Pharma profits. If the recommendation were ever enforced, the US would be the only nation in the world with mandatory flu vaccination. ...

To put this into greater perspective, since the FDA relies on industry-funded clinical trials and subsequent data to approve vaccines and drugs, there also appeared in the news this month a critical finding from the German Institute for Quality and Efficacy in Health Care, published in the peer-reviewed journal Trials. The study investigated 90 approved drugs in the US (and let us make no mistake, vaccines are drugs! In fact, the flu vaccine is listed as a Category C drug; which means there are no adequate safety studies to determine whether flu vaccination adversely affects pregnant mothers and their fetuses.) and discovered that 60 percent of the 900 papers were unpublished and some were concealed from the federal regulatory agencies. Forty to sixty percent omitted clinical details or changed their final analysis. Scientists who were responsible for World Health Organization (WHO) advice on stockpiling of pandemic flu drugs had financial ties with companies which stood to profit, according to an investigation. WHO made no mention of the links.

A spokesman for WHO said the drug industry did not influence its decisions on swine flu.

However, in case there was any doubt about it, the emergency committee that advises WHO has announced today that swine flu is still a pandemic -- even as medical authorities are saying that the virus is past its peak.

Last September, a large study by Canadian scientists Danuta Skowronski and Gaston De Serres threw Canada into an uproar with their findings showing people who had prior "seasonal flu" shots were much more likely to come down with newly appeared H1N1 (Swine) flu illness.

When the dust had settled every Provincial Health Department but one, New Brunswick, declared seasonal flu shots would not be given until perhaps January of the new year, with only the new H1N1 vaccine immediately rushed into service. As it turned out by January first new flu cases had sunk to essentially zero so the seasonal flu shot became a moot point, having little appeal.

All this was front page in newspapers across Canada, yet was completely ignored by the U.S. Health establishment and news media, illustrating the usual policy by officials at the the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to keep the American public in the dark. In other words just follow orders from CDC Generals, don't ask questions, and in the immortal words of NBC's Dr. Nancy Snyderman on national TV, "just take your damn flu shot."

In 2008, 39 percent of parents became educated about vaccinations and refused or delayed vaccines for their children. This compares to just 22 percent in 2003.

The data comes from a telephone survey of the parents of 9,000 toddlers. Many of the parents were worried about whether the vaccines were safe or effective.

On July 9, 2009, the Andhra Pradesh Minister for Health and Family Welfare in association with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and PATH (Programme for Appropriate Technology in Health) International a non-profit organization based in USA launched what it described as a ‘demonstration project’ for vaccination against cervical cancer. The vaccine, against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is one of the most common families of viruses and the source of a common sexually transmitted infection, was administered to 14,000 girls between the ages of 10 and 14 in three mandals – Bhadrachalam, Kothagudem and Thirumalayapalem – of Khammam district in Andhra Pradesh. In Andhra Pradesh, the vaccine used was Gardasil, manufactured by Merck Sharpe and Dohme, the Indian subsidiary of Merck and Co. Inc., a US-based pharmaceutical company.

In a similar project, on August 13, 2009, the Gujarat government launched a two-year ‘Demonstration Project for Cancer of the Cervix Vaccine’ in three blocks of Vadodara District – Dabhoi, Kawant and Shinor – to administer three doses of the HPV vaccine to 16,000 girls between 10 and 14 years. There were reports of deaths of four girls from Andhra Pradesh and two girls from Gujarat following the administration of the vaccine.

Health authorities in Hong Kong on Friday ordered the recall of rotavirus vaccine contaminated by a pig virus, though members of an advisory panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the vaccine did not appear to create health risks and should still be used.

The Rotateq vaccine recalled in Hong Kong is made by Merck and is one of two U.S.-approved rotavirus vaccines. The recall comes two months after the FDA recommended that doctors suspend use of the other rotavirus vaccine, GlaxoSmithKline’s Rotarix, because it was found to be contaminated by the porcine virus. Now more sensitive tests have turned up pig virus in the Merck vaccine, too.

Without a virus-free vaccine to choose from, members of the FDA advisory panel said that use of the vaccines should continue because the benefits outweigh the risks. The pig virus is not known to cause human illness, and rotavirus can cause severe diarrhea and is responsible for the deaths of thousands of infants each year, particularly in developing countries.

Officials in Hong Kong described the recall as a precautionary measure in response to quality control issues involving the Rotateq vaccine.

The lack of a virus-free version of rotavirus vaccine may cause the FDA to revise its warning to avoid Rotarix, reports MedPage Today.

Global healthcare giant GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) reported healthy results for the first quarter, backed by continued swine flue vaccine sales and also improved performance by respiratory, dermatology and healthcare products, especially in the emerging markets, Asia Pacific and Japan.

Earnings for the first quarter surged 16 per cent, or 30.7 pence a share, to £1.6 billion compared to £1.4 billion for the first quarter last year. Turnover increased to £7.4 billion, up 13 per cent over £6.8 billion in Q1 2009.

Pharmaceutical sales generated £6.1 billion, 83 per cent of the total revenue with emerging markets and Asia Pacific/Japan reporting sales increases of 43 per cent and 45 per cent respectively.

Total vaccine sales were £1.4 billion, 50 per cent of which was on account of H1N1 vaccine for swine flu.

A total of 44 pupils became sick and was taken to the hospital after receiving the hepatitis B vaccine at school on Thursday in Huilai county, in Jieyang of Guangdong province, the Guangzhou Daily reported Friday.

On Thursday morning, 84 pupils got the injection, and some felt ill half an hour later, and 44 had been taken to the hospital as of 5:00 pm, the newspaper said.

The disease control center of Huilai county said they have used more than 90,000 doses of the same batch of hepatitis B vaccine but did not have any abnormal reactions. The rest of the vaccine has been sealed up.

(NaturalNews) Now that the U.S. government has achieved its monopoly over health care, new technologies are in the works that will allow the government to remotely monitor and track whether ordinary citizens are complying with taking medications prescribed by conventional doctors. One new technology described at the U.S. Senate Committee on Aging allows "pills to be electronically outfitted with transmitters" which would track the patient's compliance with medications and broadcast that information back to government health care enforcers who check for "compliance and efficacy."

Efficacy of Gardasil and Cervarix highly suspect; serious side effects were reported

Set up inquiry into death of tribal girls

NEW DELHI: Close to 70 civil society groups, public health organisations, medical professionals, human rights organisations, women's groups and individuals have voiced their opposition to the nature of the HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccination ‘projects' carried out in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat by PATH International, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the respective State governments.

They urged the Union government to come up with a national policy on this kind of medical “experimentation” and a pro-people vaccine policy based on public health needs.

In a memorandum submitted to Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the groups pointed out that the efficacy of the vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, was highly suspect and a number of very serious side-effects, including deaths of vaccinated girls, were reported across the world.

As per extensive documentations made after fact-finding missions by local groups in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh (where 14,000 girls in the age group of 10-14 years have been vaccinated with three doses of the HPV vaccine), 120 reported adverse side-effects.

Other Bacterial Strains Become More Important, While Antibiotic Resistance Increases

Newswise — In the decade since the introduction of pneumococcal vaccination, significant shifts have occurred in the bacterial strains causing serious pneumococcal infections in children, according to a pair of studies in the April issue of The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal (www.PIDJ.com). The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information and business intelligence for students, professionals, and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health, and pharmacy.

The two studies—one from Massachusetts and one from Texas—find that the most common cause of invasive pneumococcal infections is now a strain called serotype 19A, which is not prevented by the current pneumococcal vaccine. The studies also document a rising rate of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant pneumococci.

Three Cuban children have died and dozens more are ill after receiving a single measles vaccine manufactured in India.

The Cuban Health Ministry said a "rare accident" had occurred on 22 May after a group of schoolchildren were inoculated against the disease with apparently contaminated doses from India.

The vaccines were certified by the World Health Organisation and purchased through the Pan-American Health Organisation.

No details were given about who the victims were, or where the incident took place.

Rotarix Vaccine Contaminates Millions with Pig Viruses
FDA "Temporarily" Suspends Using Vaccine

On Monday, March 22, 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asked pediatricians and other physicians to "temporarily" suspend administering GlaxoSmithKline's vaccine, Rotarix. This vaccine is one of two licensed in the United States (U.S.) that target the rotavirus infections. The other vaccine, RotaTeq, is manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc.

Approximately one million children in the U.S., and about 30 million worldwide have received the Rotarix vaccine since it was FDA-approved in 2008. Nearly 70 million doses have been distributed. How will the remaining dosages be handled? Will they be discarded or will the suspension be lifted for the sake of profits. We must keep our eyes fixed on this issue.

The vaccine was contaminated with a substantial amount of DNA from the porcine circovirus 1, a virus known to infect pigs. An academic research team, using a novel technique to detect viruses in a range of vaccines, discovered the contamination. The research team has not been named, but it immediately alerted GlaxoSmithKline and the FDA.

In this study, we isolated a feline infectious ERV (RD-114) in a proportion of live attenuated vaccines for pets. Isolation of RD-114 was made in two independent laboratories using different detection strategies and using vaccines for both cats and dogs commercially available in Japan or the United Kingdom. This study shows that the methods currently employed to screen veterinary vaccines for retroviruses should be reevaluated.

The Coalition for Vaccine Safety (CVS) believes that the Special Masters of the Court of Federal Claims wrongly decided that thimerosal-containing vaccines (TCVs) do not cause autism. The Special Masters appear to have based their decisions on the government policy to protect the vaccine program rather than to fulfill their role to do justice by vaccine-injured children. In these three 'test case' decisions in the Omnibus Autism Proceeding, petitioners William Mead, Jordan King and Colin Dwyer developed normally through the first year of life and then regressed into autism. They presented thousands of pages of scientific documentation and testimony. Their evidence showed that thimerosal, a mercury-laden vaccine preservative, more likely than not contributed to their autism.

"The deck is stacked against families in Vaccine Court. Government attorneys defend a government program, using government-funded science, before government judges. Where's the justice in that?" asked Rebecca Estepp, a CVS steering committee member and mother of a petitioner in the Omnibus Autism Proceeding.

Specifically, I have been "warned" not to print any more articles written by Dr. Andrew Wakefield (he wrote for the first time in the last issue); I was also warned not to invite him to speak at our conference. Separately, some organizations have warned me that they will not have anything to do with me if I continue to support and publish papers by him. Some advertisers tell me they have to stop working with us as they are "under pressure" to pull out, and a number of celebrities, high earning individuals, journalists, scientists, practitioners, and people who want to contribute to the magazine or to our campaigns say that it’s more than their job’s worth to be associated with the work of this man more than their job’s worth to even listen to what he has to say. All of them say that they can’t support The Autism File if The Autism File appears to support Dr. Wakefield.

A study from researchers at UC Davis found nearly a dozen places in California where children are much more likely to be diagnosed with autism.

One of the so-called "clusters" is a neighborhood in Modesto.

As the parent of a 6-year-old with autism, Lucia Soares said she's also assumed that the chances of getting the disease had nothing to do with where you live.

"No, that doesn't make sense to me," Soares said.

However, the study that came out Tuesday from researchers at UC Davis shows at least 10 autism clusters in California -- "hot spots" where compared to surrounding areas, children have about twice the chance of being diagnosed with autism.
